I’m starting something new to push myself creatively. I’m going to take a different artist a week, do studies of their work, and read/watch about them and their life/creative practices. I'm going to be doing copies of Van Gogh's work over the next two weeks.
Here's my sketch next to Van Gogh's Painting.
I started off by doing a study of Van Gogh’s painting Self-portrait with grey felt hat. I love this painting. The movement of the background really pulls me in as the viewer. For this copy, I used markers because I had limited time today (I worked on this sketch for about an hour). I struggle to use color in my work, and I found Van Gogh’s use of color exceptional (especially in this portrait). I found the use of green in the face a challenge but I think it worked out in the end. Also, I love the way Van Gogh uses blue in the piece, but if you know me you know I love blue. In my opinion, Vincent Van Gogh is one of the greatest artists of all time. To me the most impressive thing about Van Gogh, is his work ethic. He spent so much time painting and drawing. He was fully invested in the practice part of his creative practice. This is something I want to emulate- creating no matter what comes my way. I really enjoyed this study.
